Ciao a tutti! Oggi ho l'onore di presentarvi Jenny Mendes.
Jenny è un' artista molto conosciuta in America sia come designer che come ceramista. Lavora a tempo pieno fin dal 1994 ed ha ottenuto riconoscimenti in molte parti del mondo. I suoi lavori sono esposti in molti luoghi, tra cui: The Signature Gallery, Atlanta, The Works Gallery, Philadelphia, The Obsidian Gallery di Tucson, Akar Gallery, Baltimore Clay Works, per citarne solo alcuni.
Le sue ceramiche parlano di un mondo folkloristico e fantasioso, ironico e sensuale, ma ora, ecco a lei la parola...
Hello Everyone! Today I have the honour to introduce to you Jenny Mendes.
This great artist is a ceramicist and a fulltime studio artist designer since 1994. Jenny has exhibited her work in many places, including:  The Signature Gallery, Atlanta, The Works Gallery, Philadelphia, Obsidian Gallery in Tucson, Akar Gallery, Baltimore Clay Works, and many Fine Art Craft Shows.

Hello Jenny, thanks for spending some of your time for my blog! Let's start with my answers:

1 Ciao Jenny, la prima domanda è sempre rituale, da dove nasce la tua passione artistica?
Were you always interested in art? What about your artistic development?

Ricordo che ho amato l'arte sin dalla scuola materna. Ogni giorno non vedevo l'ora di recarmici perché volevo disegnare e sperimentare insieme a un caro amico che ammiravo. Lo consideravo un artista "vero" e lo rispettavo molto per questo. Così, anni dopo ho preso lezioni d'arte a scuola, e ho proseguito gli studi al college, continuando il mio percorso personale in modo indipendente durante gli anni.
Yes I remember loving art in kindergarten, and being excited to go to school each day because I would draw and make things with a special friend who I thought was a "real" artist.  What about your artistic development?  I took art classes in school, and went on to study in college, and continued on independently over many years.

 2 Da dove attingi l'ispirazione per i tuoi fantasiosi oggetti?

Where do you find inspiration for your pieces? 

Ovunque guardi, la mia immaginazione vola. Tutto è fonte di curiosità e stimolo.

Everywhere, in absolutely anything.  Wherever I look, and wherever my imagination is inspired.

3 Qual'è il tuo soggetto preferito?
What is your favorite subject? 

Sicuramente amo rappresentare le persone, l'uomo nella sua complessità ed espressività, poi la natura, speciamente il mondo animale.

Probably people in their complexities, but the natural world is a close second. 

4 Il tuo lavoro spesso è permeato da un sottile erotismo, soprattutto nella decorazione dei tuoi piatti. Puoi spiegarci che cosa vuoi esprimere?
Your work often reflected a subtle eroticism, especially in the decoration of your dishes. Can you explain to us what will you communicate? 

Penso di avere una mente aperta, così lascio il mio subconscio libero di ispirare mio lavoro. Lo sento vagare tra le mie opere, concretizzandosi in un oggetto, in una scultura. Cerco di esprimere esperienze reali o immaginarie, condividendo questi argomenti con il mio pubblico, sempre in modo giocoso, mai volgare. La creazione artistica può permettersi di infrangere dei tabù, delle regole severe, così posso proporre argomenti piu' grevi o "proibiti" in maniera leggera e ironica.
I like to have an open mind, and let my subconscious peek out a  little bit in my work.  I think I am trying to express real or imagined experiences, exposing and exploring these topics in a playful manner, creating an easy entry point even when the subject is more serious.

5 Nei tuoi pezzi ci sono spesso creature per metà umane e per metà animali. Personalmente mi ricordano molto le ceramiche SudAmericane, (in particolare quelle Maya o Azteche). Sei stata in qualche modo influenzata da questa  antica corrente artistica?
In your pieces there are often creatures half animal and half human. Personally they remember me the South American pottery, (especially Mayan or Aztec). You've been in some way influenced by this current? 

Mi risulta piuttosto naturale combinare forme animali ed umane. Sì, amo molto la ceramica precolombiana, avendo avuto la fortuna di visitare il "Museo Nacional de Antropología" in Messico, quando ero al college, che mi ha fatto una grande impressione, come vedi!!
It is very natural for me to combine animals and human forms, but yes, I do love Pre-Columbian pottery, and was lucky enough to visit the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico when I was in college, which made a big impression!!

6 Puoi raccontarci della tua quotidianità e della tua famiglia?
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and about your family ? 

Poche semplici cose: sono sposata e vivo in Ohio. Per il resto sono un artista-ceramista a tempo pieno. Viaggio molto per lavoro. Partecipo a mostre, fiere ed esposizioni in gallerie d'arte, e ultimamente  mi occupo della vendita online dei miei lavori attraverso Etsy.
I am a full time artist working with ceramics.  I mostly sell my work myself, traveling to exhibitions, through galleries, and lately online through Etsy.  I am married, and living in Ohio.  

7 Quali sono gli artisti che ammiri?
Who are the artists you like? 

Non saprei nemmeno da dove cominciare...ce ne sono così tanti!! Mi piacciono tutti quelli che lavorano col cuore, amo l'intimità che riescono a trasmettere nel loro lavoro. Ho scoperto un sacco di nuovi artisti su Etsy , posso citarne alcuni: Cendrine Rovini, Paulina Temmes, Elsa Mora. Apprezzo molti pittori, anche gli artisti dilettanti, perchè anche loro comunicano qualcosa... Adoro inoltre in maniera particolarel'arte antica .....
There are so many I wouldn't even know where to start, but they would all share one thing, which is that they work from their hearts, and it is evident in their work.  I have discovered a lot of new artists on Etsy that I love.  Cendrine Rovini, Paulina Temmes, Elsa Mora.  I love so many painters, untrained artists, ancient art.....

8 Tre cose "a caso" su di te.Tell us 3 random facts about you. 

Mia nonna mi ha insegnato tutto sul giardinaggio. Aveva  profondi occhi verdi...il colore della primavera! Mi piacerebbe imparare a parlare bene almeno un'altra lingua. Ho un cane di nome Claude.
My grandmother taught me all about gardening and had pale green eyes the color of Spring.  I want to study and learn to speak at least one other language reasonably well.   I have a dog named Claude.

Come vi avevo già anticipato in un' altra sezione del mio blog, oggi inauguro la mia prima intervista. Questo vuole essere uno spazio dedicato a tutti gli amici artisti che ammiro e che ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere, virtualmente o di persona. Un omaggio alla creatività, alla manualità e all' arte nelle sue molteplicità, narrando una breve storia su ogni ospite tramite fotografie, seguendo la loro ispirazione attraverso un percorso fatto di particolari, volti, cibo, illustrazioni, quadri e tutto ciò che serve a raccontarli.

As I already mentioned in another section of my blog, today I inaugurate my first interview. This is a space dedicated to all the friends and artists that I admire and I had the good fortune to meet, virtually or in person. It will be a tribute to creativity, manuality and  Art in its multiplicity, telling a short story through photographs of each guest, according to their inspiration through a path made ​​of landscapes, faces, food, drawings, paintings and everything you need to describe them.

1 Ciao Sara, grazie per l'intervista e per la tua disponibilità! Partiamo subito, raccontaci del tuo percorso artistico. Sei sempre stata interessata all'arte? 

Hello Sara! Tell us... What about your artistic development? Were you always interested in art?

Ho sempre avuto una vena creativa, un' immaginazione iperattiva che è sfociata nell'espressione artistica. Mia madre era un insegnante d'arte quindi questo ha avuto una forte influenza su di me. Ha incoraggiato la mia vena artistica. Creare era la cosa più interessante di tutte, per cui ho capito che quella era la direzione che volevo intraprendere.

I've always had a creative streak, which eventually lead, eventually, out of the wilderness that an over active imagination can be into the World of Art. My mother was an art teacher so there was that influence and encouragement. Making things was usually more interesting that anything else so that's the direction I always seemed to go.

2 Dove trai l'ispirazione per le tue illustrazioni?

Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?

Dalla quotidianità, dalle piccole cose di ogni giorno. Faccio vagare la mia mente e creo schizzi che poi trasformo in illustrazioni. 

Everyday things. Or I let me mind wander in my sketchbook and then paint the scenes that appear there.

3 Qual'è il tuo soggetto preferito?

What is your favorite subject?

Dipingo per lo più animali. Ho creato una serie di dipinti astratti o grandi collage finemente assemblati che raffigurano ritratti femminili, ma in generale, mi piace antropomorfizzare gli animali.

Artwise, I paint mostly animals. I have a few series that delve into abstract or big, painstaking collages of women's heads, but in general, I enjoy anthropomorphizing animals.

4 Le tue opere spesso riflettono uno stile felicemente ironico. Ci sono molte buffe creature, gatti, cani, maiali. C'è un motivo particolare?

Your works often reflected a happy, ironic style. There are many creatures, cats, dogs, pigs. Is there a specific reason??

C'è troppa oscurità, troppa oppressione in tutto il mondo. Non voglio rappresentare cose tristi. Da qualche parte c'è sempre una scintilla d'allegria, una risata, un sorriso ... questo è ciò che rende degna questa vita, a mio parere. Voglio rappresentare qualcosa di positivo, una luce, una speranza. Non sono inconsapevole della vita reale, ma ritengo che un tocco di ironia qua e la' riporti l'equilibrio in tutte le cose.

There's too much frank darkness in the world. I don't feel a need to portray that when there is always somewhere a brief moment of sparkle, a laugh, a grin...that's what makes it all worthwhile in this life, in my opinion, so I keep things light, but I'm not one for real SAP, so a twist of irony here and there keeps things balanced.

5 Ci parli della tua famiglia?

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and about your family ?

Vivo nella stessa città dove sono cresciuta, a Rochester, New York, vicino allo splendido lago Ontario, con il mio compagno Felix Caruthers (artista anche lui) e con i nostri 2 cani, Henry e Zoshi.
Mia madre e mia sorella vivono abbastanza vicino a me. Mio fratello invece, vive in Colorado.

I live in the same town I grew up in, in Rochester, NY, by the beautiful Lake Ontario, with my mate and fellow artist, Felix Caruthers and our 2 dogs, Henry and Zoshi. My mom and sister live pretty close by and my brother lives in Colorado.

Sono vegetariana. 
Tutti i miei vestiti son di seconda mano, provengono dai mercatini.  
Mi piacerebbe aver talento per la scrittura ma non penso di averlo...nonostante questo, spero di scrivere un libro un giorno...non si sa mai!

I am a vegetarian. 
All my clothes come from thrift stores. 
I wish I had a knack for writing, and despite the real lack thereof, I do hope to write a book someday.
